From the article: Things to Say to a Laboring Woman
When in labor, hearing words of encouragement can be really great! What did that look like for you? I love you. Good job! I'm proud of you. What did you want people to say, if anything?

About the baby
- When we took childbirth classes, they said "Tell her to picture her cervix opening" and other such technical stuff. NO THANKS. My body will do what it needs to with out telling me! During labor (between contractions) my hubby and I laughed and joked, even played thumb war! (He cheats BTW.) Even though I did go in to slight shock after, and had some complications before, I remember it all pleasantly! I did however demand silence during actual contractions to concentrate.

Silence
- My sons birth was nothing short of a trauma. He was an emergency and all I remember was rushing shouting people, loudly beeping machines and bright lights. All I wanted was for everything to be quiet that I deliver my son with my hands over my ears!

Soothing Music
- I wasn't up for long conversations. I just needed some calming music. I had a wonderful home birth, so I just asked my husband to put on some Indian ragas. It was very soothing.

That Everything Was Going to be Okay
- My daughter decided to come 6 weeks early and it was a bit frightening. All I wanted was to hear was that everything was going to be okay. I was all alone, my husband was three states away for the weekend to attend a car show with his dad, I had no way of reaching him while he was traveling on the road (before cell phones). My parents were away on a secret get-a-way anniversary celebration (no one knew how to get a hold of them). Thank goodness for a caring nurse who came and sat with me for a few minutes, answered my questions, and helped calm me.

Just his voice...
- My husband could have said nearly anything. I just loved hearing his calming voice. I know he was saying sweet things that were encouraging. They made me feel loved and protected.
