Readers Respond: What is the best breastfeeding gift?

One of the best things you can do to learn about breastfeeding is to gather the wisdom passed down from mothers to each other. That includes the gifts they give each other either at a baby shower or during the postpartum period. So what was the best breastfeeding gift you got? Or do you have an awesome gift you give to a nursing mom and baby? Share Your Ideas

A Healthy Meal

I get so hungry when breastfeeding and it is sometimes hard to find the time to prepare healthy meals. Gifts of food were so appreciated!

A light blanket for cover

The best gift would be a light blanket, for modesty cover, that is actually big enough! Not those tiny "receiving blankets", but something bigger... and at the same time, the fabric should be very light. Nothing too hot or thick. That would be the very best gift... (Oh, and colors that wouldn't look bad after some spit-up accidents!)

been fullfilled as amother

I have been fulfilled. Breastfeeding makes you closer to your child. It helps you to develop the mother-child friendship.

Breastfeeding Pillow

The best breastfeeding gift is a support pillow especially if you have had a c-section. I had a c-section and it was the first baby and when someone gave me the pillow it felt like the gift from heaven. It was the best physical support I could get to proceed with my plan to breastfeed the baby. :)

A Shoulder To Cry On

Breast feeding is super hard and also very personal. I wouldn't accept a breast pump or other breast feeding related gift from anyone but my mom (too weird). However, I do like talking to other BF moms and sharing experiences. It's nice to know that someone else understands what you're going through.

Moms Need Support and Praise

As a former nursing mother, I think that a new mom really needs support --and praise-- from her loved ones. She should know that what she is doing is what Mother Nature intended. Breastfeeding is healthy for both mom and baby and it draws them closer.... and you don't have to heat up any bottles or spend money on formulas that were put together in a factory. I think it's a good idea to tell mom about organizations like La Leche League that can help her and tell her the many documented benefits of nursing which even some doctors are not aware of.

Time

Offer your time - time to watch other children, time to clean the bathroom or wash a floor, time to make a pile healthy snacks or a meal, time to run an errand, time to go grocery shopping or do errands with a new Mom, time to hold baby so Mom can take a shower, time to just listen and offer support (along with funds for an LC if needed).

Lactation Support Gift Certificate

Usually a mom and baby need help from a lactation consultant after birth. Unfortunately, this is cost can really add up. A gift certificate to a professional with whom the mom has been recommended (by her practitioner or her baby's practitioner) is a great help. That way, paying for lactation support is one less worry!

Support!

You have to give as much support as possible. I try to take the new mom to a breastfeeding support group even if she isn't having problems, so she can see that she's not alone.
