Miscarriage Followed by Complicated Pregnancy with a Healthy Baby

My Current Pregnancy

From the start it was a challenging pregnancy. I bled again, but thankfully it stopped. I am a type 1 diabetic and suffered a lot of complications with the diabetes during this pregnancy.

My Pregnancy Loss

We were so excited to find out that I was pregnant again in December of 2008! I started bleeding immediately after we went for first doctor's visit. We did an ultrasound on the 28th of December and was relieved to see the tiny heartbeat. On the 30th I experienced cramps and heavy bleeding. When I went for a 2nd ultrasound, it was confirmed that our baby had died. It was a horrible terrible blow.

Deciding to Get Pregnant Again

I suffered from severe depression afterward. We thought that it would be best to resign, re-group and rest. I quit my job in March and consequently fell pregnant in May!

During the 37 weeks of my pregnancy, I had pneumonia, very high blood sugars, asthma, I went into labour during weeks 28 and 32 - the list goes on! But it was all worth it. I went into labour again naturally on the 15th of Jan and our little one was born at 12:40pm! What a joy and what a blessing to finally see him. I still think about our second child - the miscarriage - and I must admit that I haven't dealt with it totally yet. But I wouldn't change a thing if it were up to me. I am now the doting mother of two boys and one baby in heaven, whom I am so looking forward to meeting one day!

Advice

  • Take each day, one small step at a time
  • Take time to reflect on the past hurts, but don't dwell on them
  • Appreciate every moment and cherish every experience
  • Don't expect the worse if you fall pregnant again - but that is a totally normal response. Chances are that it might just work out and then you spent 9 months in agony over nothing and sending your baby anxious vibes.
  • I learned that it the only thing I have total control over is my response to any situation. I had to take charge of any negative emotion and change it into a positive, for me and my baby's sake!
