How far along were you when you found out?
I found out that I was expecting twins when I was 6 weeks pregnant. It was a huge shock.
What was your reaction to the news?
No one ever told us we were having twins. We had gone for an ultrasound a week before to check for another ectopic pregnancy. They saw only one sac and one fetal pole, no heart rate. I saw a dark spot and asked if I was bleeding. They said yes. The bleeding was internal and not dangerous to my health. I was told to come back in a week for another ultrasound to see if the baby had grown.
That was such a hard week. My husband and I ignored each other a lot to avoid the topic. I cried a lot. We were worried about the bad news that we expected to hear in a week. All the yucky pregnancy symptoms were still there, which only made it harder to focus since we were both sure I was having a miscarriage.
The morning of the ultrasound, we were quiet. We drove there and said nothing. Just dreading the appointment.
Immediately upon placing the transducer on my abdomen, we saw a heart beat! My husband and I both let out an audible sigh. We were both thrilled. I looked at the screen and it looked like the area of bleeding was bigger and I asked if that was the case. The tech scanned down and Kevin and I cried out at once: "It's another heart beat!" The tech snapped at us, "I didn't say that, you're looking at a blood vessel."
We never heard the words, "You've having twins!" But we knew. The doctor confirmed it, but painted a bleak picture of what we could expect. She didn't expect our "blood vessel" baby to make it, and if the baby did survive, we were likely to have preterm labor, etc. I found another doctor very quickly and had a great pregnancy.
