How far along were you when you stopped bleeding?
I stopped bleeding around 10 weeks.
What tests or treatment did you have?
I had an ultrasound because of the bleeding. It showed a heart beat that was really, really slow. They told me to prepare for the worst.
Tell us about your bleeding.
It started out as spotting one afternoon. I hadn't had a vaginal exam or anything so no reason to have spotting. I called my OB and they said to just take it easy and see what happened. But as the day wore on I started bleeding heavily. It was heavier than my period. They scheduled me to come in the next day for the ultrasound.
I continued to bleed or spot on an off for weeks, but the baby's heart rate picked up and became stable.
Tell us about your pregnancy.
After the bleeding stopped, I had a period of time where I was very worried. I was waiting for the bleeding to pick up again. It was like every week that went by I felt a bit more confident in my pregnancy.
Around the 20 week ultrasound, I nearly forgot about the bleeding all together and started to focus on the baby. I didn't have any other complications with the pregnancy or the placenta. We never figured out why I was bleeding, their theory is that it was a vanishing twin.
My son was born just at the 42 week mark! I had a nice, easy labor and birth.
Advice
- Trust your gut. I knew that the heart rate thing wasn't a real issue.
- Call your doctor or midwife. Even though they can't do a lot, their advice was reassuring.
- Find stories from others who have had successful pregnancies with bleeding.
- Don't dwell on the negative.
