Postpartum Sitz Bath Recipe with Comfrey

By , About.com Guide

After giving birth your perineum and muscles will be sore. Traditionally a sitz bath will help you heal and relax while taking care of some of the aches and pains of giving birth. These herbs are selected to help the process along. This can also make an attractive gift for a baby shower or new mother.
Prep Time: :15
Cook Time: :30
Ingredients:
  • 3 cups sea salt
  • 1 ounce comfrey root (or leaf)
  • 3 ounces myrrh gum powder
  • 3 ounces uva ursi
Preparation:
Combine all parts of the mixture into a bowl and mix the dried ingredients together. Place them in a mesh bag, muslin tea bag or even a brand new knee high stocking. In a quart of water, steep them for about 60 minutes. You can use the steeped water to soak wash cloths in and place directly on the perineum or line your postpartum pads with these (baby wash cloths work really well for this one). You can then add the water to your sitz bath or low filled tub bath for soaking. You can reuse the packet of herbs again but steep for twice as long the next time. This should make six baths.
