Pregnancy and Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

By , About.com Guide

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus that is part of the herpes virus groups. It affects between 40 and 85% of adults in the US. Usually a person with CMV has very few symptoms. Though once infected with the CMV virus (primary infection), the virus will lie dormant in their body forever unless the immune system of that person is weakened, this is called a recurrent infection. The problem is that when pregnant, this virus can be transmitted to your baby.

Cytomegalovirus is excreted in bodily fluids, including blood, saliva and breastmilk. It is not casually transmitted. The virus is really only a problem for those at high risk, including your baby (while in your uterus) and immunosupressed people.
