Definition: A blighted ovum is where a pregnancy occurs and the placenta and gestational sac form without an embryo. The pregnancy will continue for a bit into the first trimester. But eventually a miscarriage will occur. This type of pregnancy loss may be as common as 50% of all first trimester losses.
