Vitamins in Pregnancy

Q. We are planning a pregnancy. I've heard that I should take prenatal vitamins. Is this true and what kind should I take?

A. Yes, prenatal vitamins are a great start to a pregnancy. In fact, it is really best to begin taking them as soon as you begin trying to get pregnant. As for which kind, it really doesn't matter, as long as it has the .04 mg of Folic Acid, which has been shown to help prevent neural tube defects (spina bifida, anenecephaly, etc.). There is a big debate over prescription vitamins and over-the-counter vitamins. Usually there is no difference, except in price and in who pays for it. If your insurance pays for the vitamins you may need a prescription. If not, hike to the nearest drug store and try which ever one appeals to you.

Q. My vitamins are making me ill! What should I do?

A. If you have been taking your vitamins in the morning, try taking them at night. If this still doesn't help then I would recommend that you try a different brand of vitamin.
