Demerol
Demerol is usually given with another IV medication called Phenergan. This is given to help reduce the side effects of potential nausea from the Demerol. Phenergan usually makes women very sleepy.
The majority of women will describe that their use of Demerol left them feeling rather "drunk" and unable to cope with the contractions at all.
Nubain
This is very similar in effects to Demerol, though not always given with Phenergan. This will help take the edge off the contractions while still allowing mobility within a certain area.
Stadol
Stadol is a bit better as far as complaints go, though everyone has a different reaction to all medications. The majority of women feel peaceful enough to sleep through the rest period between contractions and seem to notice a smaller amount of the contraction than they normally did prior to the administration of the medication.
IV Medication Tips for Use
- Continue to wake her up for a contraction, rather than have her surprised at the peak.
- If you feel that you are very sensitive to medication, don't be afraid to ask about different medications other than the standard drugs listed, or to ask for smaller doses.
- Get up to the bathroom before receiving the medication, this will save you a trip on the bed pan until you're allowed up again.
