Extra People in the Delivery Room

Photographers in the Delivery Room

On a trip to the emergency room, they went to start an IV. Let's just say, I'm not an easy stick. So on try number three, a technician throws back the curtain and says, "Oh don't mind me, I'm just here to stock some stuff in the room."

I looked at her and as nicely as possible asked, "Can you please wait to do that until after I am done getting this IV?" She looked at me like I had four heads, so I went on, "It's just that I'm having this painful procedure done and trying to concentrate on relaxing and you're distracting me... Is there any reason you can't come back in a few minutes?" She shrugged and left.

This quick exchanged reminded me of the many times as a doula when I'm in a labor and delivery room (LDR) and they want to stock the room. Sometimes the timing is bad, sometimes it's not. However, when asked, they are usually great about waiting. You might think it odd that strangers just come into your hospital room while you're in labor for tasks like this, but, that said, I've also encountered maintenance personnel, janitors, inspectors, students and loads of others that you might not expect in the labor room. Are you ready for the "extras" and what will you say when they come in?

I had a water birth so I had to get out of the tub and walk to the bed to deliver the placenta and get stitched up so I left a trail of stuff. They called somebody to come clean it up after a bit but the guy with the mop and bucket came right away while I’m laying there with everything out in the open.

I didn’t know but my husband told me later. Great.

One thing that I realized when I was 18 and having my first child, is that in situations like these your modesty needs to just fly out the window. You dont have anything these people haven’t seen before and their just trying to do their job. Get over it and just concentrate on your task at hand. I’ts not like their standing around munching on popcorn lookin for a show.
