I saw a photo going around Facebook that said something to the effect of, "Anyone who says that childbirth is the worst pain ever, hasn't ever stepped on a Lego barefooted." I snickered, having done both, multiple times.
But that gets at something most people don't talk about. Sure, we say labor hurts, and in some circles we talk about ways to reduce pain in labor, some without medication, some with. But do we ever really address this attitude about birth that it's just horrible and awful? Because I'm of the belief that this attitude begets fear, which causes pain. Yes, the good old classic fear-tension-pain cycle at work.
So I asked a bunch of women, what hurts more than childbirth? Here's what they said. What would you add?
