Citing the fact that 10-40% of c-section moms will have an infection, The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) now recommends that IV antibiotics be given an hour before a c-section to help lower that number. By comparison only 1-3% of mothers who give birth vaginally will have an infection.
As an aside, whenever you have antibiotics in use, I have moms watch for thrush and even yeast in themselves. If you know you are sensitive or can preplan, try eating more yogurt with live, active cultures and be prepared at the first sign of any issues in you or the baby.
