Curbing Impulse Buying for Baby

By , About.com GuideAugust 12, 2010

There is a ton of baby stuff out there.  And all of it calls to be purchased!  Trust me, I'm a sucker for an adorable baby outfit.  I've even been tempted to buy something that is the newest gadget - just to see if it works.  Research, of course.  At least that's what I tell my husband and myself.

In this time of belt tightening and budget buying, the impulse buy is a big problem.  While we may be able to walk away from a new purse fairly easily, walking away from the latest and greatest, must have baby item is a bit different.  You can actually walk past women in the stores and hear them justifying their purchases.  "It will save us money in the end..."  "I read that it works better than the off brand."  What's the excuse you use to justify purchases like this?

Instead, I offer you a solution.  This solution is simple. It's free.  And it might save you a lot of money on impulse purchases.  Wait.  That's it. Wait.  If you see something you want to buy, wait for 24 hours.  If you still want it you can buy it if you have the money.  Better yet, play a game with yourself and try to buy it online for less.  (Don't forget about shipping charges!)

What's your strategy for curbing the impulse to buy?

That is so true! My husband could talk me out of a diaper. LOL Did you take him with you when you registered for baby items? Or leave him at home? Thanks for sharing!

Haha, Anna, My husband is the complete opposite!! I have to talk him out of everything!! I usually try to look for things online and compare prices and read reviews before I go to the store and buy. Like I thought I needed the video baby monitor. I HAD TO HAVE IT, LIKE NOW!! Till I read the reviews and found out that if someone else nearby has it too, they can view your baby also!! OMGsh! NOT buying that!!
