Children at Birth

Saturday May 9, 2009

As we prepared for Baby Ocho, we also prepared the older kids to attend the birth. For our kids, this means we read books about birth and babies, talked to them about what to expect and handed out jobs for each of them. Some of the examples of jobs include:

  • Bringing ice chips
  • Cool wash cloths
  • Dressing the new baby (with help)
  • Cutting the cord
  • Announcing the sex of the baby

Not every child is ready to go to the birth, nor is every parent. You will need to check with your place of birth and doctor or midwife about having your child present. My two biggest pieces of advice are that your children have someone just to watch them and that you and they know that at any point they may be asked leave or allowed to leave if they choose.

Even if you don't intend to have your older child at the birth, they still need to be prepared for the new baby from bringing baby home to you being away for a bit. A bit of planning on your part can ease many of their fears.
