From Infertile to Four Months

Share Your Story: Didn't Know I was Pregnant for a Long Time

From Hazelton

How far along were you when you found out?

I was about four months along when I found out I was pregnant with my first baby.

How did you find out you were pregnant?

We'd been trying to get pregnant for a very long time. We'd even sought help from a fertility doctor. Finally we decided to take a break from treatments. So we went on a few long weekends, stopped being so conscious of what we ate - just sort of let it all hang out after being on the health kick that goes along with the fertility thing.

One night I was having trouble buttoning my pants and my husband noted that I'd gotten a bit thicker around the middle. He teased me about laying off desserts for awhile. It was just the way he patted my belly that made me feel pregnant, I can't explain it beyond that.

I found myself mentally calculating everything. When was my last period? While they'd always been a bit long and off, was this one worse? I'd had a period of being really tired and even slightly ill - I'd written it off to vacation, not enough sleep and a summer cold.

I went in to the other room to tell him my suspicions. He just sort of shrugged. I drug him into the bathroom to take my spare pregnancy test (Doesn't everyone have one?). I was preparing for a long two minutes when as soon as we started the pregnancy test - both lines popped up! We were so shocked!

Advice

  • Missing the often worrisome first trimester wasn't so bad.
  • Glad I stayed on prenatal vitamins anyway.
  • Try to enjoy the shortened pregnancy time.
  • Ignore people who make fun of you for not knowing earlier.
