Pregnancy and Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
Dealing with RLS in Pregnancy

By , About.com Guide

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is the feeling that you need to move your leg or legs constantly. It can also be accompanied by an uncomfortable, jittery feeling in the legs. About 10% of adults suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome, with pregnancy being one of the reasons that you might experience Restless Leg Syndrome.

You may find that Restless Leg Syndrome:

  • gets worse at night or during sleep.
  • gets better when you move around.
  • can lead to problems sleeping.

If you suffer with Restless Leg Syndrome you need to:

  • Talk to your doctor or midwife to rule out other problems like anemia as a cause.

  • Get moderate exercise during the day.

  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol and other stimulants.

  • When experiencing symptoms, move around or try heat or ice for relief.

  • While there are medications used to treat this, they are not recommended in pregnancy.
