This is a free app from the March of Dimes
. The basic premise is that this is an electronic version of their magazine of the same name, but in app format. This allows the content to do somethings that you can't do in a magazine. The crisp, clear and attractive photos enhance, graphically pleasing text with information on a healthy pregnancy throughout. There are also some special features, one of the best is that the app also is a Spanish version.
I really love the breadth of the topics covered. Here you will find everything from healthy pregnancy topics like nutrition and fitness, but also how to have a healthy pregnancy by avoiding harmful substances and preventing preterm labor and premature birth in a variety of ways. While there is always room for more information, they do provide links to other sources to continue learning. Also included are:
- Prenatal care
- Pregnancy dictionary
- Preterm labor signs
- Birth planning
- Newborn care
Each section also has tips included for added information. And the dictionary has a lot of familiar and unfamiliar words, so please take a look at that section before your prenatal check ups. Your doctor or midwife will be impressed with how knowledgable you are when it comes to getting good care for you and your baby.
I really love the month by month videos that are included. These aren't hugely technical and cover only the basics, lasting about two minutes each, but they are exactly the right amount of information from fetal development to what's going on with mom. These are the perfect videos to help parents show to older siblings to give them some idea of what's going on in there.
The breastfeeding section is particularly well done. I love that it really encourages skin to skin care for mom and baby. This is such an important message.
The navigation is also really easy. You can click the home button or using the scroll at the bottom. Be careful or you might miss a few of the tabs that say what you need to do to see more information. You might miss these little gems if you're not paying attention. I know I passed a few up before I realized what they were about.
This is also perfect for the guy in your life. Lots of great info for dads as well as moms. You can even read up about caring for mom after the birth and during labor. It's a quick and easy read, without all the flowery parts of many books. I can see even the most reluctant dad getting something out of this app.
Couple of things I'd like to see in future editions:
- iPhone and Android versions
- More inclusion of some of the other live action videos from the website
- Stories from families
- More of the NICU info they are known for (Perhaps a separate app there?)
The fact that this is a free app and looks this good is amazing.
The Bottom Line
This glossy, magazine type app is a great way to get some of the most important pregnancy and postpartum basics down. It gives you a great place to start, in English and Spanish. It also provides you with avenues for further development, should you want more information on any one topic. This is an iPad app, not a book. It's got the basics with a few extras, so don't expect more. But what you get is excellently written and beautifully styled for ease of reading. I would hope that this is one of the first apps the newly pregnant iPad owner would download.
