Vitamin C and Pregnancy

By Robin Elise Weiss, LCCE, About.com

What:
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), 85 mg

Why:
Vitamin C helps protect you from illness by fighting off infections, repairing wounds, and it helps you absorb iron in your diet.

Where to find it:
dark leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits, etc.)

When you need a supplement:
Vitamin C can help your body absorb iron if you are anemic, you should try to mix Vitamin C containing foods with iron containing foods for your body's best defense, even if it means taking your prenatal vitamin with orange juice.

Other:
Vitamin C is well known as an immunity booster. Be careful when using to help boost iron absorption, if your orange juice is fortified with calcium you could be hindering your goals.
