Definition: Evaluation of the general condition of a newborn soon after birth; numerical values are assigned to the status of skin color, heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone, and reflex irritability, a score of ten denotes a newborn in excellent condition.
This is done at one minute and five minutes. It may also be repeated at 10 minutes if the first scores are low.
Examples:
My baby had an APGAR score of 9 at one minute and 10 at five minutes.
