Definition: The labor and childbirth of a baby without the attendance of a skilled medical provider, doctor or midwife. This is done as a home birth with only the mother of the baby in attendance and occasionally her partner or another person for physical support.
Many mothers choose this to avoid the interference of a hospital or birth center birth and even the care of a midwife in a home birth, believing that birth is a personal experience. She prepares for the birth ahead of time by studying the process of normal birth. Some mothers have a secondary plan, whether that be a hospital emergency room or a back up midwife or physician. Some mothers have had professional prenatal care while others have not.
