Definition: The surgical removal of a newborn male's foreskin.
The foreskin covers the sensitive area of the penis known as the glans. This surgery is performed at the request of parents in some hospitals by doctors or nurse midwives or during a religious ceremony, like a Brit Milah (Bris), by a mohel.
This surgery is considered cosmetic by some insurance companies and is not covered. Currently the American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend routine circumcision.
