What to Expect in Childbirth Class:
A Lamaze Childbirth class has changed a lot from what you might be told by your parents or see on TV. Each class will consist of at least 12 hours of education. Topics covered will include normal birth, pregnancy, anatomy, labor basics, medications for labor, cesarean birth, breastfeeding and comfort measures for labor. Each class may also have videos, guest speakers and additional topics. Your teacher can give you specifics.
What Training is Like:
Lamaze International offers various pathways to becoming a certified childbirth educator. There is a beginning pathway, an experienced educator pathway and a midwifery pathway. Each pathway ends in a qualifying exam, some are also required to do an evaluated teaching series.
If you are new to the field of childbirth education your training will include the back ground in pregnancy and birth, normal and complicated as well as how to teach. The exact details of this portion of your education will depend on which of the Lamaze Accredited Childbirth Education Programs you choose.
