Which childbirth class is for me?:

Choosing a childbirth class shouldn't be difficult, but there are many options to consider when taking a class. Think about:

  • The experience/certification of the teacher
  • Number of couples in the class
  • Referrals or recommendations of others
  • Time class meets
  • Location
  • Cost/Insurance reimbursement

You can also take the Childbirth Class Options Quiz to see how you score.

Experience/Certification of the Teacher:

Each teacher should have experience or certification by a major childbirth education organization. This certification will ensure that someone is monitoring what is being taught and the accuracy of what the teacher says. It also means that your educator has passed a specific set of tests and requirements to call herself certified, though requirements vary by association. Just because someone has a pretty business card or holds classes, even in a hospital, does not mean that she has what it takes to be a good childbirth educator.

Costs of Classes:

The costs of childbirth classes will vary depending on the area of the country in which you live. Do ask what the class costs and what that includes. For example, will you also be given a workbook or other class texts? I do have to say that it is very important to realize that you get what you pay for, a free class is not always the bargain it's supposed to be.

Lamaze International:

"Selecting a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator ensures that you will be attending a class taught by a competent, highly qualified educator who works as an advocate for childbearing women and their families. The Lamaze credential (LCCE) identifies an educator who has passed a rigorous examination in childbirth education and supports the Lamaze Philosophy of Birth."

Bradley Method (American Academy of Husband Coached Childbirth):

"What is the difference between Bradley® and other types of childbirth classes.? The Bradley Method® is unique. Our classes stress the importance of Healthy Baby, Healthy Mother and Healthy Families. We attract families who are willing to take the responsibility needed for preparation and birth. "

International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA):

"It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the International Childbirth Education Association. ICEA is an organization of over 4,000 members from throughout the United States and 42 countries who believe in freedom of choice based on knowledge of alternatives in family-centered maternity and newborn care. ICEA offers a variety of learning opportunities for members, to enhance their personal development and the programs they provide for expectant parents and new families."
