Cloth Diapers for Babies

By Robin Elise Weiss, LCCE, About.com

Cloth diapering for babies is becoming very popular as the movement for a green nursery builds. Whether you are choosing cloth diapers for the benefit of your baby, the environment or both, these products might help you. You can choose from prefolds to fitted, all in ones (AIO) or cloth diapers with covers. What's your cloth diapering style?

1. Kissaluvs Fitted Diapers

Kissaluvs fitted diapers are very easy to use. They have a fold down top for umbilical cords, and a variety of snaps to help the diaper grow with your baby. The size 0 is the smallest, rated to 15 pounds. This size lasted nearly a whole year for my last baby. I used it originally with size 0 covers from Bummis though did eventually switch to the size 1 covers for the size 0 diapers.

The Kissaluv Contour Diapers are another option for cloth diapering. With no snaps to bind the diaper, the wrap or cover holds this together. It can be used with nearly any covers available.

These covers come in a variety of sizes and colors or patterns. The Velcro closures are amazingly awesome at keeping the diapers closed. (Though I recommend that you close them as you wash and dry them to protect this ability.) They were soft and seemed great around the legs with no leak problems.

4. Chinese Prefold Cloth Diapers

Chinese prefolds are what most people think of with cloth diapers. These use diaper pins or covers to hold them up and together. They also make excellent burp cloths, and clean up supplies for all baby related messes. My grandma also swears by them for dusting. You can easily find these in organic cotton and many moms swear by this old stand by.

5. Kushies All in One Cloth Diapers

Ah, the beauty of the all in one diaper is that you do not need a cover, wrap or diaper pins to secure the diaper to the baby. They come in a variety of sizes, styles and colors. We did use some all in ones for a potty training toddler and found them very pleasing to use, particularly with a squirmy baby.

6. Bum Genius Diapers

Bum Genius has plenty of color choices for the amazing all in one. The even better news is that it grows with your baby from birth to toddler. This could be an even better cost savings for those interested in saving money by cloth diapering.

7. Cloth Doublers

A cloth doubler is used for overnight protection or for babies who wet a lot. These are basically small pads that fit inside the cloth diaper to help absorb extra liquid. This can help prevent leaks if your child wets a lot or sleeps through the night.

8. gDiapers

gDiapers sound like the perfect hybrid for the cloth versus disposable diaper debate. Here you have a diaper that flushes down the toilet, not requiring washing or anything. Some people swear by these diapers, I found them awkward and disliked having to handle messy diaper inserts.
