When saving money on used baby items, you can do very well. There are a few tips to keep you and your baby safe. Many people will look for big ticket items like a crib and purchase smaller items new, while other families find that they prefer the opposite approach. Which ever one suits your style, you can save money safely with these few things to remember:
  • It is not recommended to buy a used car seat, but definitely not over five years old because of changing safety standards.

  • Be sure that whatever item you are buying is in good condition. There should be no loose parts or cracks in the plastic. These may cause your baby harm.

  • Whatever you buy should be up to the latest safety standards.
  • Used cribs are best when you know where it comes from first. Measure the slats to make sure they are 2 and 3/8th of an inch or less for safety. And the paint should not be of the lead variety. Also be sure it has all its parts.

  • Avoid used bottles and breast pumps. These are not wise second hand purchases for sanitary reasons. Not to mention that the big ticket items like breast pumps do have a life to the motor.

You can find good deals on baby items at places like:

  • yard sales
  • consignment stores
  • eBay
  • freecycle
  • Craig's List
