The Special Moments of Pregnancy

Nothing stirs as much emotion as starting a new life. Several of our readers shared some of their special moments, journals, and poetry with us. Emjoy!

Ten Weeks (I Heard Your Heart)

I heard your heartbeat!
And my heart jumped as well
But tears could never express
Words could never tell

The emotions at once unleashed
The elation deep within
So much I didn't expect
So much... I can't begin

To explain just what happened
As your heart beat its own dear rhyme
The sound of your own dear heart
Forever remembered in mine.

Oct 2, 1988 Well, Baby, it has been over three months now...

I think I felt you last night. It felt like a light tapping in my lower belly. It didn't feel like gas, that's for sure!

I've been hesitant to write you until now. I guess I wanted to see if the first trimester went all right.

You know, Baby, it's so frightening to know you have entered my life. First Jim, now you. It seems almost too much at once, but I believe I can do this and do it fairly well.

A wife and a mother. Six months between the two. WOW.

I hope you're healthy and content, and I hope you & I can be friends...

I am only 7 weeks as I write this, so I realize I will probably have more special moments, but for now this has to be my favorite one.
My special moment came when I told my husband I was pregnant. We have only been married 4 months, but we discussed having children long before we were married...we were high school sweethearts. I was on the pill till about 2 months before our wedding then I quite taking it in hopes that by the time of our honeymoon we would be able to get pregnant. Anyway, it must have worked.
I knew I was pregnant at 5 weeks, but chose to keep it a secret until we celebrated our anniversary of the day he and I first met. When I told him I was pregnant he got really quiet, and then looked up from his plate of food at the restaurant we were in and grinned. He goes "No joke, you are really having a baby?" and I smiled and said yes. Then he stood up in the restaurant and said "My wife just told me she was having our baby." The whole restaurant applauded and I was actually in tears at his sweetness. The waiter brought us a cake and on it, it said Thank You Steph for Sticking Around All these Years! Then in tiny letters it said and giving me something I have dreamed about for years a child. The rest of the dinner we just sat and held each other. I even ate the cake although I was overly nauseous. The whole night was so perfect, it seemed like it came right out of a Romance Movie.

"A Mother's Prayer"

I look up at your nest, Mother Bird,
and wonder where you are.
Your home is now covered with snow and ice,
and I need your wisdom more than ever.
As I rub my swollen belly
I think of you and your babies in Spring.
You prepared for their arrival
by creating a home of warmth and safety.
I watched as you flew back and forth
with the nourishment you knew was needed.
You sheltered them under your wing;
protecting them until they were ready to be on their own.
You showed them by example
that they could soar and reach any height they
And, when it was time for them to fly away
you gently nudged them,
giving them the courage they needed.
May I, too, create a home that is so safe and filled with love
that when my children are grown,
I'll have to encourage them to leave this nest they call home.
