October 25, 2000:
Forty Weeks, Four Days
8:40 a.m.

Well, I'm not ready to call it labor yet for fear of scaring it away, but today is starting out a lot like the day that Isaac was born nearly three years ago.

First of all I actually slept last night. It wasn't for long and it wasn't uninterrupted by bath room breaks, but it was more than usual. I was laying in bed as Kevin got the kids ready for school and going over my plans for the day in my head when I realized I was having very light contractions. Today is my day alone. Kevin left to go to a field trip with Benjamin, all the other children are nestled safely at school, and I've got stuff to do!

The funniest part is that we're getting a new couch today. When I was born there is a story of a new couch and how my grandmother refused to let my mother sit on it because she was overdue and they were afraid her water would break on it. Guess I should have lunch on the couch?

Well, I'm going to finish some laundry, clean the kitchen and pretend not to notice any contractions until I have to or they go away. I promise to update as I can. Send me lots of goo labor energy and positive thoughts today!

10:44 a.m.

Things slowed a bit or I failed to notice them when I took a shower and washed my hair, then a bath to make sure I could shave my legs. However, now that I'm running around cleaning and going up and down the stairs things are back to where they were. So, even if I don't get the baby out today I will have a clean house and a new couch! (Can you tell I'm taking the couch omen seriously?)

12:53 p.m.

I had pizzza for lunch. I may be sorry later as my stomach is already starting to churn. The couch is here. I did sit on it, nothing happened, I'll try that again later. Right now I need to go lay down while it's still quiet here...

4:07 p.m.

I'm awake and still contracting. No real change in the pattern but they do require a bit of concentration. My pelvis is even squishier than it was before, as if I ever thought that was possible. Kevin and Isaac are home and the other kids will be here shortly. I talked to the midwife just to let her know what was up. I feel really out of it...

8:43 p.m.

Well, the walk was one big contraction. Taking a bath didn't slow it or stop it, neither did a shower. They are just twingy enough that I can't sleep but not enough that I need the midwife. Kevin is doing a great job helping me stay relaxed.

11:41 p.m.

Kevin did the dishes I had wanted to do today. The he was nice enough to make not one but two pumpkin pies to help feed the masses that will soon be descending upon our house. Tomorrow we'll make a quick grocery trip if I'm still in this pattern of labor. My first two labors were very much like this so I'm trying not to get discouraged. Midwife is unconcerned, says sleep, eat and move around as I feel comfortable. We'll see her in the morning one way or the other...

No baby yet...
