Pregnancy Dictionary - I

Implantation: Where the fertilized egg burrows into the lining of the uterus.

Implantation Bleeding: When the egg implants, some women will notice a slight spotting, often mistaken for their period.

Incompetent Cervix: A cervix that is weak or has been damaged causing it to open prematurely.

Incomplete Miscarriage: Where a miscarriage has started, but the uterus has yet to expel all of the contents.

Induction: To artificially start labor for medical reasons.

In Utero: Inside the uterus.

Isoimmunization: Development of antibodies directed at the red blood cells of the baby in utero. This happens when an Rh negative woman gives birth to an Rh positive baby. It will not effect the first pregnancy or be a problem if the baby is also Rh Negative.

IVF: In vitro fertilization. Fertility procedure to fertilize eggs outside of the body and the replace them inside the uterus in hopes of achieving pregnancy.
