A Real Icebreaker!
Before the guests arrive write the name of something to do with Pregnancy,
giving birth or babies on a piece of masking tape. As each guest arrives
stick the piece of masking tape on their back, not letting them see the word
before you do so. The object of the game is to find out what the word is
taped your back by asking each guest only 3 questions. The guests may only
give one word answers and give no hints! After asking 3 questions if they
still don't know the word they must ask another person and so on until they
guess the word. The first one to guess the word wins a prize. Continue the
game until all the guests have guessed their word. This game works especially
well if a lot of the guests don't know each other. It forces people to mingle
and talk to people they may not have talked to otherwise.
Another ice breaker I saw once at a cocktail party was using single cartoons
with captions (ie: the Farside cartoons). Photocopy enough cartoons (do not
use the same cartoon twice) to cover half the amount of guests you expect.
Cut the captions off the cartoons. Pin or tape a cartoon or caption to each
arriving guest so that it is visible to everyone. Have the guests try to find
the caption to match their cartoon or vice versa. You may use this premise in
a variety of ways, not just with cartoons. Try Nursery Rhymes for example,
using the title of the Nursery Rhyme and a sentence from the rhyme, etc. Be
creative!
