Definition: This usually is in reference to a maternal screening done between 15-17 weeks of gestation to screen for neural tube defects (NTD), and down syndrome. Has a high false positive rate, though is more effective when the triple screen is done, using hCG, AFP, and estriol. Alpha-fetoprotein is a substance that is produced by the baby.
