So you'll find:
Reasons to Breastfeed
When thinking about why you want to breastfeed and asking others, you'll get numerous answers. You might hear: "It's better for the baby." "I breastfed my others." "My pediatrician said to try it." "I just want to do it." "I heard I'll lose weight faster."
Whatever your reason for wanting to breastfeed remember to enjoy the experience and prepare by learning all you can.
Getting Started
Getting started might bring to mind the first few minutes after birth, however, I'd vote for getting started meaning get prepared during pregnancy. Learn all you can, read books, attend meetings, talk to other moms. Although it is important to note that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that nursing begin in the first 60 minutes of life when possible.
Finding Help
While breastfeeding is a natural process, we've also pretty far removed it. It does take some practice and sometimes learning or relearning for you and the baby. Patience is always a virtue, but help isn't far away. It's always best to find the resources for help prior to having a problem. If you are giving birth in a hospital or in a birth center ask to see the lactation consultant prior to leaving. Get a quick check of positioning, etc. If you're having your baby at home get a demonstration from your midwife or doctor.
Using a doula for labor can also provide you with a good source of the basic help for breastfeeding.
I must also say that not everyone who works in a nursery knows about breastfeeding. I'm often amazed at the lack of up-to-date knowledge many nurses have, if you fear you're being told the wrong thing, don't hesitate to ask for the lactation consultant or a nurse how successfully breastfed her own children.
Support groups like La Leche League. There are many support groups all over the world. Once again, go before you have the baby to learn what you can.
