Peter Michael's Birth

By Robin Elise Weiss, LCCE, About.com

Induction, Pitocin, Natural then Vacuum then C-Section. EDD 4/20.

On Tuesday, April 18th I went into the hospital at 7:00 pm. I was given a drug to thin out my cervix (Servadil) and slept comfortably. Wednesday, April 19th at 12:00 pm I was given Pitocin to start my contrations. I labored hard. I only received Demerol which did nothing because my contractions were at 1 minute apart and there was no time to dose off in between. At 8:15 pm my water was manually broken. I begged for an Epidural but had to wait until I hit 4-5 centimeters.Somewhere around 10:00 pm I was moved to a birthing room and received an Epidural and slept into Thursday morning. One leg seemed not to be affected by the drug and I got shooting pains from my hip to my but. It felt almost like your leg fell asleep and it really hurt. Thursday morning, April 20th at 6:30 am I was dialated at 10 centimeters and ready to push. I pushed for about and hour and a half and the baby did not crown. Then a vacuume was ordered. I was viewed by 10 residents. No luck so at that time another doctor jumped on top of my chest to help push the baby out during a contraction (excruciatingly painful). Three times and no good. When the vacuume was removed, my uterus was torn and blood went everywhere. Also by pushing so hard, my vagina was torn. Now it was time for a c-section. The finally got him out, but now had to sew my uterus in which it took so long my anesthesia wore off and I could feel everything. I screamed and told them to give me something, but they insisted it was just pressure I was feeling. After I kept screaming they gave me something. During this time my husband was sitting behind me holding my beautiful son who weighed 8lbs 11oz and 20 & 1/2 inches long. This was the worst and at the same time the most beautiful experience of my life. He was worth it all.
