Epidural was a Godsend!

By Robin Elise Weiss, LCCE, About.com

My son was due on July 7th. Everything was very uneventful during my entire pregnancy. In fact, I never even noticed any braxton hicks! At dinner time on July 7th, my water broke. So, off to the hospital we went. I wasn't progressing at all, actually I wasn't even contracting very much. So, they induced me with pitocin. I am the biggest baby when it comes to pain. When I started feeling the contractions, I asked for the epidural. They complied no problem! Shortly after they administered the epidural I was numb from the belly down! I couldn't really move my legs! After a few hours they said I was ready to push! I got the epidural at about 3 cm maybe. The whole time I didn't feel one contraction, not even pressure! So, the nurse told me when to push. I had no problem pushing like some women say. I could barely even feel the pressure of the baby's head! It was great! The only thing I felt was when the episiotomy tore(4th degree laceration) It hurt but for only a few seconds! My son was born on July 8th at 10:50 am. He was 9 lbs 4 oz and 21 1/4" long. The episiotomy wore off shortly after the doctor repaired the tear! I had no problems whatsoever with the epidural. In fact, I am pregnant and due very shortly and I plan on getting one again! I hope it is as successful as my last!
