Baby Haylee's birth story

By , About.com Guide

I had a really great pregnancy no morning sickness and only gained 25 lbs. My due date was Jauary 14, 1998. December 14 I woke up at 4:30 am with contractions 10 minutes apart. I got up and took a nice long shower, the contractions were moderate and I could still concentrate. After an hour I decided to try to get some rest. I woke up at 6 am and the contactions were gone. Later that morning I called my doctor and they had me come in to be checked. I was 80% effaced and 1 cm dialated. He told me not to go back to work and to lie in bed for a week. He thought that I would have the baby by the next week. Well I went to my doctors appointment that Monday and he asked me what I had felt about being induced, he felt that the baby was getting big, and he wanted to try anything so I would have a vaginal birth. We set the induction date for Tuesday the 13th of January one day prior to the due date.

I went to the hospital at 6 am and the nurses showed me to my room and told me that because of the icy weather I would have to wait for the pitocin untill more nurses arrived ( apparently I was the busiest day that they had, had in about a year. So at 10 am I met my first nuse Jenny, she started the IV and the pitocin. The anethesiologist came in and discussed the epidural procedure with me. I told him I would not be needing one and he asked me to listen anyways, so I did.

By 1 pm the contractions were 3 minutes apart, but they were not painful. So my Dr. called and asked if I wanted to have my water broken, I did and it hurt really bad. They upped the pitocin and the contractions were really getting uncomfortable. I tried to rock in the rocking chair and I sat on the toilet for about an hour it was the most comfortable position for me.

Around 4 pm I asked for an epidural and Jenny said that the anesthesiologist was in with a cesarean and it would be about 45 minutes, so I tired to put on some make-up and relax. I asked how long it had been and my husband said "oh ummmmmmmmm about 4 hours" the cesarean was having some major problems. So my nurse called in another anesthesiologist from home. At 9 pm I was only at 4 cm so I received the epidural and it was wonderful. Ten minutes later I felt the urge to push and so the nurse checked me and I was at 7cm. I got a new nurse named Olivia she was wonderful.

I tried to rest and then I got sick all over the floor that was at 11 pm, my doctor came in and I was ready to push. At 11:30 I started to push and it took a while to get the hang of it. Finally at 12:34 am Haylee Marie joined my husband and I, weighing in at 8lbs. 13 oz. and 20 inches long. She voiced her opinion and nursed very vigorously. (she still does)

Dr. Bair was not even on call and he stayed for my delivery he was absolutely wonderful.

Haylee is almost a year old now and she has grown 12 inched and is up to 20 lbs. I had a very wonderful pregnancy and delivery.
