Brian's Birth

By Robin Elise Weiss, LCCE, About.com

Tuesday I saw my Dr. She told me I was 2cm, 50%, and at -1 stn. That night DH and I went to see Lethal Weapon 4 and I felt crampy and uncomfy. I figured it was because of the internal. I woke up at 12:30 with what was to be my first contraction. It just felt like major back ache combined with gas/diarreah. After that I went back to bed, and woke up at 1:30, 2:20, 2:40 then gave up! I was up all night and my contractions became regular at about 3:30 at 20 mins apart (still fairly spaced, but not altogether pleasant) I woke up DH at 5, and then ended up sending him to work for 7 because they were still far apart. All day they were about 20, then 15 then 10 mins apart, and they kept getting more intense.

Finally at about 7 I said, enough of this, and called my doc and told her we were going to the hospital (I was exhaused already!) We went downstairs and the battery on the car had died (DH in his panic..which lasted all day while I was in labour and he was at work..had left the lights on) So we called my MIL to boost the car..then we got going..half way to the hospital, we get rear ended by some guy in a minivan!!! He asks if we want to go thru insurance or if we want him to pay for it, DH says, look, my wife is in labour, we are on our way to the hospital! So he gave us his number and name and off we went. After I got there it got borring..contractions the same, 4 cm, full effaced. The nurse told me then that my dr had streached my cervix at my appt the day before (and I didn't know) That lasted ALL NIGHT AGAIN! I got a shot of nubian at about 11 so I could sleep (what a heaven send) Then the next day, more of the same! at 2:15 I was fully dialated but conx were still 10 mins apart so they gave me oxytocin to start them up so I could push him out! 1/2 hr later we were pushing, and 1/2 hr after that, he was born! No tearing, no stitches ...absolutly perfect! I couldn't have asked for a better labour really. I didn't find it all that difficult until the drip, and that was only an hour, and it flew by since it was productive!

Anyway, Brian was born at 3:34 on Thursday Oct 8, weighing 7 lbs 12 oz, 21 inches long, and looking perfect :) (Of course, I'm totally biased!) I think he looks exactly like DH and not like me at all! (of course, I'm thrilled with that, DH is so cute!)

He nurses wonderfully, and the only problem we have had is with jandice because we have incompatible blood types (I'm o+, he's a+) and he developed antibodies to my blood which gave him jandice. He had 2 blood tests and now he's getting much better!
