It's all well and good to talk about what baby names rank well nationally, but the lists that are by state are a bit ore local and sometimes look vastly different than the national lists. This happens for a variety of reasons. The most obvious reason is that when you have a huge state with lots of births, their preferences for names will give boost to a name that isn't popular in other areas. The flip side of this is that a state with fewer births will not influence the end result very much at all.
