Saving Money on Baby Wipes

Cloth Diapers

Baby wipes are amazing inventions.  Now I know that my mom and her mom had to deal with lots of non-helpful items.  But I seriously love baby wipes.  You can clean faces.  You can clean bottoms.  They wipe up spills.  I carry some every where I go!  But all that convenience can certainly add up to be a lot of money.  So I figured out that there are two ways to save on baby wipes.

You can make your own!  This can be as simple as using the adjustable paper towels and ripping them apart at the one sheet mark and laying them in a plastic container and covering them with solution.  (The ripping part is a great job for an older sibling who wants to help.)  Or you can make your own baby wipes by taking some fabric and cutting it, like flannel or terry cloth - your choice.  Some moms even have the know how or ability to go a bit further and surge the edges to prevent fraying or make them look a bit prettier. If you don't feel like you're up for the cutting of fabric or the tearing of sheets of paper towel, you can also try buying cloth wipes.

Cloth wipes save money because you can use them over and over.  Some families use one color wipe or type of fabric for all bottom related wiping business and another color or type of fabric for other uses, like wash clothes.  You can wash these separately or you can wash with your cloth diapers, if that's the route you've chosen to take.

The benefits of cloth diaper wipes also include:

  • You control what goes in them.
  • Better at cleaning.
  • Gentle on baby's skin.

Why would you make your own baby wipes?

I didn’t know that you could make your own baby wipes! That’s a great idea. You control the formula and can adjust it if need be. I bet it also saves a fair amount of money. Personally, I would make the disposable type rather than using cloth. Like your mom and grandmom, I had to raise my children without a lot of modern conveniences, and disposable wipes is one that I would not suggest doing without.

If you use cloth diapers (which we do) disposable wipes are just a pain. We have cut up flannel receiving blankets that we put in a wipe warmer with homemade solution. I still buy disposables for the car, traveling, emergencies, etc, but we don’t use nearly as many. Plus, I can clean a poopy diaper with one cloth wipe that would take 3-4 disposable wipes.

Very good point about the 1 wipe versus several wipes…

Wow, I like these nice tips. It is not easy to save money in things for your baby. I also try to find ways to save money especially for expansive thinks. Now I have an account on BarterQuest.com. You can barter all kind of things there. I would not barter wipes but things like a crib or a stroller. If you really want to save money than try it! You can trade things you don’t need for something very useful.

well this is nice, but you can also save money if you use the wipes only to clean the dirty busines :-)

and use other things for everything else.

like we only use dispossable wipes to clean poop when needed, all other time we use reuseble burp cloth or towels
