Falling While Pregnant

Worried Pregnant Woman

Ouch! A reader email reminded me of an accident I had when pregnant. I was happily walking across the street and minding my own business and when I went to step up to exit the street, I completely missed the curb. Now we all know that at 36 weeks pregnant, graceful is not in the dictionary, but there I sat in tears, more from a bruised ego than anything, with bloody knees and surrounded by a crowd of people who were horrified.

Let's face it, falls like this are fairly common in pregnancy. This doesn't make it fun or pleasant, but just a fact of life. Pregnant women have a lot against them in the gravity department. When pregnant you probably feel a little of balance most of the time, not to mention that you can't see your feet after a certain point. The good news is that most falls do not harm the baby in any way. Find out what you should do if you fall.

I fell at about 2 months. I was in socks on the hardwood floor and I slipped and fell hard on my tailbone. I was so afraid that something was wrong, but the baby was fine.

I fell at about 8 weeks with my 1st child, going down stairs- I fell four stairs and landed hard on my tailbone. I was in panic, but called my midwife and she reassured me and told me what problem signs to look for. This pregnancy I fell down eight stairs and landed hard on my bottom at 11 weeks. I didn’t really worry about it and I’m now at 16 weeks.

Something about pregnancy just makes me so so clutzy… it’s like being a teenager again! ;-)

Ouch! That sounds painful. I’m glad your midwife gave you the signs of what to look for – that’s always a better feeling than simply worrying.
