No one really wants to talk about constipation in pregnancy, but it's truly one of the earliest signs many women experience.  Constipation is caused from pregnancy hormones that cause the digestive tract to slow.  When you add complications like a diet that might not be high in fiber or is lacking due to symptoms like morning sickness, you've got a compounding problem.  Here are a few things you can to do help ease constipation in pregnancy:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking water.
  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • Talk to your practitioner about iron supplements and how they may effect your bowel habits.
  • Get regular exercise.
  • Eat plenty of fiber.
  • Consider fiber supplementation with the help of your practitioner.

Avoiding constipation can also help you prevent other ailments, including hemorrhoids.
