Some Pregnant Women Need to Gain Less Weight
While the guidelines are officially new, they have been in the works for awhile. Studies have been going on for the last few years as the number of obese and overweight women who are pregnant have grown. One study about pregnancy weight gain in women who are obese (BMI above 29), it is being said that not only do they not need to gain a lot of weight, but a neutral gain and even a loss may be perfectly acceptable for these patients. One of the studies talked about the benefits of weight loss in pregnancy, as far as preventing some diseases like pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH), gestational diabetes (GD) and it could even help lower the c-section rates.
The pregnancy weight gain that is recommended for women with a body mass index (BMI) under 30 has not changed:
| BMI | Recommended Weight Gain |
| 30+ | 11-20 lbs |
| 25 - 29.9 | 15-25 lbs |
| 18.6-24.9 | 25-35 lbs |
| 18.5 and lower | 28-40 lbs |

Basing ANYTHING on BMI is junk, in my opinion.
BMI are suitable for 90% of world population. For the other 10%, you can use % of Fat Mass index.
it said i shouldve gained 25-35lbs… i gained 55lbs! lol! oops… only 9 more lbs to lose since giving birth 4.5 months ago!! yay!
How did you lose the weight so fast? I’m due in a week and gained around 60lbs, I’m freaking out that I’ll have a tough time losing it!
I am only 7 weeks and I have already gained 6 pound, God knows what is going to happen later. I am worried
I gained 10 pounds in the first 2 months and so far at 25 weeks I have gained 25 pounds. My doctors don’t seem to be worried . I walk every day and eat fairly healthy. If your hungary then eat, and have treats in moderation. I wouldn’t fret, there are too many other things to worry about when you are pregnant.
As long as you eat healthy, walk and listen to your body and keep your choices of snacks healthy. Remember potato chips and ice cream are empty calories!
I’m just 16 weeks and have gained 10LBs so far!!!! I’m hoping its fluid!!!
I am now 30 weeks pregnant and I have now gained a total of 10kg which is 22lbs. I should (according to this) put on a total of 25-35lbs by end of pregnancy but in the last 10 weeks your supposed to put on a lot of weight :S so we’ll wait and see how big i get! HELP! x
