With every pregnancy I craved something different. The most recent pregnancy it was actually steak and pellet ice. Thankfully I never craved any of the stranger things you hear about pregnant women craving. Did you know that what you crave can actually indicate that you have a problem, for example, anemia?
Some women crave protein and others crave good for you foods. There is actually a disease called pica that is when you crave non-nutritive food substances like clay, dirt, rocks, burnt matches, and laundry soap, to name a few. Though most of us have really only thought of pickles and ice cream as the nasty pregnancy craving.

Malt Vinegar. I used to drink it from the bottle!
Red meat. I told my dr and he rechecked me. I was anemic. I also craved sweets, even the ones i didn’t like. Turned out I was Hypoglacemic too.
I’d never had peanut butter until I was 3 months pregnant. Just the smell used to gross me out. But throughout my first pregnancy I ate it almost every day — and I haven’t been able to give it up since. I’ve read about some of the concerns with breastfeeding and eating PB, but I think there’s something in my body that just needs that sweet spread and since there’s no history of allergy in my family, my understanding is that it shouldn’t be a concern.
I loved ice, but I wouldn’t exactly say I craved it.
French onion soup. I go to a diner twice a day sometimes. I never ate it before I got pregnant, but my twin girls must love it!
I had pica from about the second trimester til I delivered and craved new carpet, antibacterial cleaner, bleach, and dirt. I discovered the dirt craving one day when I was washing potatos and the smell of the dirt on them made my mouth water! I wanted to lick it off them! But I didn’t! My friend got me some samples of carpet from a shop for me to sniff. Probably not particularly healthy, but at least I didn’t eat it.
Banana bread, with walnuts. Made a mini-loaf every two days. Served it to myself with a generous dollop of real butter. OMG! Gained a TON of weight!
I craved sweet potatoes (one a day), grapefruit (ate it like an orange every night before bed) and Japanese food, which I normally dislike. And anything spicy and sour!
I totally craved lasagne and french onion soup, it must’ve been the cheese, since I’ve craved cheesey, salty things in my other two pregnancies too. That and ice cream toward the end–every night!
Cheeseburgers and french fries, and anything with cocunut, but most of all, fresh pineapple. I would eat pineapple until my whole mouth was burning.
I remember strongly craving 2 things – BLTs and Root Beer Floats. MmmMmmMmMMmm
Lime popsicles and hot peppers (not together thankfully).
With #1: Feta cheese, by the cup full! Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
#2: Bomb Pops, Saltines, Heineken (I usually don’t like beer), Reisens.
#3: Ice (almost constantly), sushi (yes, I indulged in Philadelphia rolls), Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.
First pregnancy I wanted everything all the time, it was like I had a tape worm. Constantly hungry and thirsty and everything was delicious. THIS PREGNANCY I have been craving salad, soup, whole grain bread, oh and my latest that I eat every day at least once is loads of LF cottage cheese with lots of fresh cut up tomatoes and green onions stirred in. Yum, my mouth waters just thinking about it.
During my 1st pregnancy, I had a Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Filet sandwich (plain) EVERY DAY. With a chocolate Frostie.
During both my 1st & 2nd pregnancy, I finished my day with chocolate ice-cream with strawberry preserves. To this say, I swear it cured heartburn.
I craved salt and vinegar chips
With my 1st 2 pregnancies I craved ketchup or anything with tomato sauce on it. I would eat ketchup plain out of the pack! With #3 I craved anything sour. I drank strait brown vinigar, sour kraut, anything fermented!
With my first pregnancy I craved pickles and applesause..together. I would dip my pickles in it. With my second pregnancy I am just craving pickles…lots and lots of pickles! lol
