Does age make a difference in pregnancy?

Friday October 3, 2008
I'll admit that my personal opinion is that pregnancy was much easier in my early twenties than it is in my mid-thirties. But is it really the age or is it something else? Something like the fact I have other children to take care of now? That I can't lay down whenever I want? Or that I simply know better?

This pregnancy seems like the early pregnancy signs came stronger and lasted longer, I was still throwing up daily at 22 weeks. The heart burn also started early, could it have been my first sign of pregnancy? And sleeping was difficult, not just insomnia but also the fact that my hips ached early as my pelvis got ready for labor.

So perhaps I was feeling a bit more discomfort with age and pregnancy, but I suppose the trade off of knowing what's coming and the experience of having been there before was helpful. What's your thought on the issue?

In my experience, besides age, every expecting baby brings you different experiences. My first one did not cause me much nausea but the second one now is causing me nausea. Furthermore, I have a lot of pimples on my face during my second pregnancy. Keeping your body healthy is of utmost importance.

I am 23 weeks with number 6. I am 44 my children range in age 23, 18, 5, 4, 3 and my unborn. Like every child every pregnancy and birth is a new adventure. With this one my doc had many threatning things to say. So far my baby and body are doing fine. It has a lot to do with your state of mind and amount of patience. My young adults are successful and my young babies are thriving. The bigest difference is being around young moms who are as young as my oldest. Thank God I still look as young as I most often feel. (no grand babies yet) I have been blessed God is Good!

I am 45 and am 27 weeks pregnant with my 8th. My children’s ages are: 21, 18, 17, 15, 12, 9 and 8. So it has been a while! And my experience is that my body is saying, “DOn’t worry- I’ve done this before.” I actually feel fabulous, maybe better than any of the other pregnancies. I feel beautiful.

I am 33 weeks pregnant with my second one, and it is far, far harder than my first pregnancy. I worked in the health care field, lifting and tending to bed and wheelchair ridden patients right up to 36 weeks with my first. This time through, my hips and back hurt so horribly that my OB/GYN took me off work at 6 months. He seems to think the combination of being two years older and having a two year old to wrangle at home has created quite a hurdle for my body.

I am 32, pregnant with my fifth, ages 11,9,6, and 3. I am currently 20 weeks pregnant. All of my other pregnancies, I felt fabulous! This time around, I am aching in places that I never even knew existed. Everything is different. I had morning sickness longer, my fatigue is higher. People keep reminding my that I am no longer in my twenties. Perhaps they are right. My oldest child is in middle school now which means an even earlier rise for us all. Less sleep and a very active 3 year old..I’m exhausted. We are planning a homebirth this time around..one small reason is because I don’t think that I’ll have the energy to round them all up and get them to the hospital in time :-)
