Pregnancy Weight Gain

Friday August 8, 2008
Gaining weight is an important part of pregnancy. It can be hard to imagine being happy about gaining weight, but pregnancy is a time to enjoy not watching calories as strictly, or at least enjoying a bigger bottom line when you do eat. Recent studies have indicated that many women may be gaining too much weight in pregnancy, making their pregnancies and birth more complicated, not to mention postpartum weight loss.

On the other hand, there are a number of women who are struggling to gain weight. Sometimes these moms are suffering from severe morning sickness or even just nausea. Other times, they may have started out their pregnancy underweight and simply need to add a few more pounds than average. Moms of multiples, twins or greater, will also need to add a few more pounds than average. It's also important for moms of multiples to gain more weight early on, since their babies tend to be smaller and be born earlier.

Then there are the women like me who have gestational diabetes who keep losing weight. I was a plus size person to begin with, so my drs are not worried. I go for monthly sonograms to make sure the baby isn’t gaining too much and they monitor for preeclampsia.
