Nuts: Pregnancy and Asthma Risks?

Tuesday July 15, 2008
A new study is talking about the potential risks of eating nuts and nut products like peanut butter in pregnancy. The initial results showed that moms who consumed these products daily in the last month of pregnancy had children who had a 50% increase in cases of asthma. This may sound concerning for you, but the truth is that moms who reported regular use of nut products, defined as six times per week, did not show an increase.

The study authors say that more work is definitely needed in this area before pregnancy recommendations could be made. Until then they urge moderation and no drastic changes in your diet. Remember that nut products are also a great source of protein and good fats, handy snacks and just plain yummy.

Certainly there are foods to avoid in pregnancy, but realistically we have to eat to gain weight in pregnancy. Sometimes I know I feel a bit crazy with all the food recommendations, particularly on what to avoid - and it changes daily! How are you feeling about your pregnancy diet?
