Awhile ago, I heard a lady discussing her baby's name with the lady at the grocery check out, not the celebrity baby names. She was saying that she and her husband picked out their baby names on their first date. That totally floored me. How could you do that so early? Annika? Eric? Poppy? Piper? Jerome? Which baby name sounds good to you? And has it changed? I know when I was little I hated my name. I wanted to be Mary. So how can you, sight unseen; heck even swollen abdomen or positive pregnancy test unseen, choose a baby name?

So my question to you is when did you choose a name for your baby? Did you do as the lady above and pick them before the wedding? Did you decide in pregnancy as soon as you had an ultrasound? Or did you narrow the field and decide once you laid eyes on the baby? (Okay this is where I confess that our last baby went three weeks without a name. She spent several of those being called various names just to try them out. She was almost Nora. In fact, the morning of her naming ceremony, the clergy called us up to ask if we really had a name or would we be canceling!)

Like the couple in your story, my husband and I also chose our son’s name when we began dating. It went like this: My now-husband was telling me how his grandfather Jacob was a huge positive influence in his life growing up. He said that if he ever got married and had a son, that he would like to name him Jacob after his grandfather. I thought to myself - Oh, I really like that name for a boy. And thus, when we got married a year later and had a son 3 years later, his name was already picked out. Thank goodness, it was a boy, because we never could agree on a name for a girl!

My husband and I decided on our son’s name before we were officially engaged. His cousin, whom he idolized, was named ricky. Ricky was killed in an accident before my husbands daughter was born. When I got pregnant, we decided to name it Richard Michael if we had a boy and call him Ricky. We did name him as planned, but upon seeing him, my husband decided that he would be called Mikie after him instead. So although the name was decided as a sort of tribute, my husband still has his namesake.

i’m not married but i already have a name for my baby if GOd would give us with girl friend’s agreement. And i thought that is a good ideology to pick kids’ names for some reasons that may suit once thought in life
