Every year the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention release the Preliminary Birth Data from the previous year. Today they released the data for 2006. Interesting statistics on births can be found here including the cesarean rate, teen pregnancy rates, how old women are when having babies as well as how many children is average.
"The cesarean delivery rate rose again in 2006, to 31.1 percent of all births, a 3 percent increase from 2005 and a new record high. The percentage of all births delivered by cesarean has climbed 50 percent over the last decade."
“There’s no doubt that cesarean surgery is being overused,” said Pam Udy, president of the International Cesarean Awareness Network. “Unfortunately, despite its reputation as a harmless surgery, many women and babies are paying the high price of complications from this surgery.”
In addition to the highest c-section rates ever, the teen pregnancy rate rose for the first time in many years.
