Winter Coats for Pregnant Women

Wednesday November 21, 2007
It's getting cold, so staying warm is on people's minds. Okay so I get an email that I think I know the answer to, but it's a fashion question regarding maternity clothes. Here is what the reader had to say:
"I'm due in April so I'll be fairly pregnant this winter. I don't fit in my old coat, but I also don't really want to buy a new coat just to wear this year. Any suggestions?

I gave the reader my advice for staying warm while pregnant in the winter, but perhaps you have some wise words to share with her too? Feel free to leave a comment with your suggestions.

I never really needed a winter coat. I was always so warm anyway… Have you considered that?

I like the idea of wearing your old coat but not buttoning it. I rarely button my coat anyway.

I use a big shawl I got. These are quite popular this year and work really well. It covers my belly and arms, but I don’t have to worry about out growing it. It’s like a huge piece of fabric I can just stick my head through.

I have an old pregnancy coat with a zip out panel. It was nice even after the baby because the panel would let me keep the baby in a sling or front pack inside the coat. When I wasn’t pregnant, I could remove the panel.

I am really cold natured even when pregnant. I had my first son at the end of April 2005 and are now due with my second son at the end of April 2007. I got a really inexpensive maternity coat off Ebay when I was pregnant with my first son. It originally sold for $100 and I got it used for $20. Make sure you compare the prices sometimes you can get one on clearance for the same price as a used one. I also wear a really long scarf so that I can fold it in half, put it around my neck, and tuck the ends through the loop in the fold in the front to cover any exposed skin on my neck and chest. I also love ear muffs, mittens, and toe socks.

I had to go to a ski resort over winter while 7+ months pregnant. My dilemna was how to keep that belly gap covered and warm without spending more money. I didn’t want to buy a new coat either, but I caved after finding one at a department store on sale in a size large. It was cheaper than any maternity store—It actually zipped up, had a cute fur hood and looked decent (it’s black so it’s slimming). I also wear a puffy down vest (maternity) with turtlenecks and sweaters under it a lot. I guess in the end I felt a lot better having a cute coat that I can wear all winter. Ebay does have great used maternity clothes! I plan on selling my coat next fall on ebay as well as some other maternity clothes to recoup some of my dollars….Good Luck!

I am also due in april and could no longer zip up my old coat. I went to a less expensive department store and bought a $40 black coat. I was 5 mo by that time so i made sure that it would zip up for a couple of more months. I figure by the time im too big to zip it im goin to be too hot to want to anyway and i can wear it next year because i didn’t get it too big.
