According to reports, Japan's Princess Kiko is expecting her third baby this fall. The problem? She has two daughters, so the pressure is on for her to have a son so that he can be in line for Emperor.
While many countries have banned the use of technology to find out the sex of a baby, fearing abortion for babies of the "wrong" sex, will Princess Kiko find out whether the baby she is carrying is a boy or a girl before birth?
Ultrasound can be used from about 18-22 weeks of gestation. Though ultrasound does run a higher risk of inaccuracy, particularly if used outside of this time frame. Amniocentesis and Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) can be used earlier with nearly 100% accuracy, but also can have negative ramifications on the pregnancy.
Ah, what's a princess to do?
